Rethinking Identity

Rethinking Identity

We watched a documentary in class about Hawaii. This documentary I found pretty interesting since I didn't really know much of anything about Hawaii. The only thing I knew about Hawaii was that it was one of the last states added to United States, and that I really wanted to go there for vacation. When asked what I thought about Hawaii I responded like any person that doesn't know the history, I wrote down the nice sandy beaches and blue waters, Hula dancers. This was my image of Hawaii. The words poverty, illness, struggle would have never popped in my mind when thinking about Hawaii before this documentary. While I still believe Hawaii has beautiful beaches, I know know a little more about the people of Hawaii.

I was more than shocked to hear that the Hula dance was illegal to perform up until the 1960's unless for entertainment purposes. The Hula dance is something that is associated with the Hawaiian image. That's just telling the natives that its OK if your making money for doing it but its illegal to do it on your own.

The internet is full of information both good and bad. A lot of information can be misread and misunderstood by just reading it online. Therefore, I personally have done a little research on both sides of my family. I found a family book from my mother's side that states there were/are some Ku Klux Klan members in her family. This is beyond crazy to me seeing that a majority of my grandparents children are mixed. It was a little disturbing to hear at first but then I realized people are going to be who they want to be and these people probably haven't been surrounded by people of other races to feel any other way.

The Pinky Show

I believe The Pinky Show is effective because you don't know who is behind the character. The character is so disguised you couldn't even take a guess at the age, sex or race if you wanted to. It's easier to not be able to see who the person is then it seems as if its coming from an unbiased source. When you hear and see a cat discussing such topics as imperialism it almost throws you off a little bit. If it was a newscaster you could have your own judgements about the person reporting because you can picture a past on this reporter but when its a cat that's kind of difficult. Just like political cartoons and comics. They get their point across in drawings and little bubbles with usually only the main points being focused on. Which may be easier to understand for some than watching hours of political debates. This cartoon clearly shows the education reform with only 5 words.

The future of education

I couldn't even begin to think what the future of education will look like. If I had to say something I would imagine everything will be digital. Books and paper will be the first thing to go. It's so much easier that e-books have came out and you don't have to carry around those big intro books. The access is much easier, its lightweight and usually has multiple uses. I think online schools and classes will be much more popular. People have busy lives and it's hard to not work a full time job now a days.

  1. I have a strong belief that technology will take over the classrooms. I think books will evetually be electronic which will be cost-effiecnt for students:) Personally, I do and do not want electornic texbooks because I do not really get along with techonology and I am just old fashion.
